Description
From Sandusky Street bridge, the camera looks down upon one of the busiest spots in the entire terminal at a typically busy moment. In the foreground, L-3a No. 3000 eases off the BN lead onto the westbound main with the 69 cars of manifest DSL-1, out of Detroit for St. Louis. (The unusual manner in which the Detroit-St. Louis trains in each direction are handled at Bellefontaine will be expounded in connection with later photographs.) The steepness of the drop out of the west end of BN yard is noticeable here from the elevation of the train about 25 cars back. In the background: on the right, an H-6 starts up the eastbound main, enroute from the roundhouse to East yard to make a yard changeout. On the westbound main, an L-2 off a drag freight from the west waits for DSL-1 to clear before completing its last lap from East yard to the roundhouse. To the left of DSL-1's train, a pair of GP-7s wait on the roundhouse lead; when DSL-1 clears, they will move to the fueling station at the depot, just west of Sandusky Street (diesels were relatively rare at the time and fuel facilities had not yet been installed at the roundhouse). The operators' shanty at Sandusky Street protrudes above the first car of the train, and the coal dock loons in the background haze.
