Description
The scene here approximates that of two pages ago, with the camera again trained on the 3000 as she heads into East yard with no. 96 (this picture is a follow-up to the preceding one - same engine, same train, same day). It is interesting to note that, before World War II, the main line here was tangent and East yard consisted of only ten through tracks and two stubs. This proved to be entirely inadequate, so the mains were curved to the north to make room for six more tracks. These alterations are well illustrated by the photograph two pages back. Therein, the yard engine is on present track 7, formerly track 1 (tracks numbered from the mains). Tracks 1 through 6, lying between the eastward main and track 7, are the ones which were added. Tracks 1 through 4, regularly used for yarding inbound trains from the west and south, are accessible from the eastbound main via a lead by-passing the drill track (the train above is entering the yard on this lead).
