Title

View from E 152nd St Cleveland

Subject

Diesel Freight train

Description

The overpass at East 152nd Street, Cleveland, provides an excellent vantage point from which to scan one of the busiest bottlenecks on the entire New York Central System. This is the view looking east. From right to left, it includes the South yar, the passenger mains, the west throat of Collinwood yard, and a portion of the back shop. Collinwood yard is the spawning ground for all Ohio Division freights emanating from the Cleveland area, although at least one of these (SLBF-1) originates in part further east, and several others pick up some or all of their consists at other years in the Cleveland area. The train shown pulling out of the yard is not a Big Four, however – it is NC-1, the New York-Chicago merchandise hotshot, with Alcos 1072-3346-1071 and 52 cars. The twenty-track Big Four yard is behind and to the left of the light tower, and departures from this yard are made via the track just to the left of the pole line, at left above. The twenty-one track westbound yard is behind and to the right of the light tower, and the thirty-one track eastbound yard spreads out in the foreground. From the pole lie over the tracks and their uses are as follows: The “high speed”, a lead from the west bound yard; the “north main”, a long track used to yard west-bound solids; the “south main”, a running track through the yard; the eastbound ladder; “main track no. 1”, an eastbound running track for light engines; the west and east bound passenger mains; and the tracks of South yard, a facility used for storage of specially-equipped auto parts cards. The shanty in the right foreground is the eastbound yard office (the main yard office is the two-story building behind the light tower).
