Train DJ-5

Steam Freight Train

Description

Mohawk type 2993 leads DJ-5, a Detroit-Joliet run oriented towards Santa Fe, Rock Island, and GM&O connections at Joliet, out of Junction Yard onto the westbound main. The bridges in the background carry Miller Road (from whence the crossovers at this location take their name), the Detroit Terminal Railroad, and the C&O and PRR together, in that order. Like the 2967 pictured on the previous page, engine 2993 is of class L-2d, built by Alco in 1929. One hundred fifteen more 4-8-2s of the L-3 and L-4 classes built in the late '30s and early '40s swelled Central ownership of this type to more than six hundred locomotives. Needless to say, they were the mainstays of the mainline freight fleet right up to the diesel age.
