Description
The scene now shifts to Watertown, former headquarters of the St. Lawrence and Adirondack Division comprising all trackage north of Utica and Syracuse. This jurisdiction has been eliminated and the territory now belongs to the Mohawk Division officials at Utica. Train BP-1 here is basically an iron ore run from the Jones and Laughlin pit at Benson Mines in the Adirondacks to the mills at Aliquippa and Pittsburgh; on this occasion it consisted of 61 loads of ore and 4 miscellaneous empties and was powered by Alcos 1040-3330-3329-1039. This locale is known as Watertown Junction where the Syracuse-Watertown-Massena main line, occupied by BP-1, and the Detour, entering at left, connect. The two lines offered alternate routes north for some seven miles to the junction point of Roots, but the main line has since been abandoned north of the Watertown city limits.
