Description
These big Fairbanks-Morse units, nos. 5007-5009, are chortling in a subdued, opposed-piston bass as they ease past the depot at Suspension Bridge. Behind them out of Lockport Street yard are the 60 cars of SD-1, a Canada Division run due out of the Bridge at noon and into Windsor at 9:00 PM (and into Detroit, after a good deal of dissecting at Windsor and a couple of joustings through the tunnel and back into City yard, at 1:40 AM). Thirty-three cars in the consist are special gondolas filled with auto frames, and, knowing the demands of assembly-line consignees, it is safe to say that their passage to Detroit will be 'protected' by a fast run over the Ontario flatlands. This final shot, unexciting but yet meaningful, typifies to a considerable degree the general subject-matter of this album in its particular subject-matter and its location. Multi-tracked railroad, tangled with switches, studded with signals, cobwebbed with yards, and swarming with trains, passenger and mail and freight and more freight. Such is the character of the Buffalo Division.
