Description
Facing west from Union Road bridge, we see, from left to right, the eastbound receiving yard, the thoroughfares, and, beyond them, the westbound advance yard. The latter yard, consisting of eight tracks, was, like its eastbound counterpart, used for storage when these pictures were taken. On the eastward thoroughfare is NY-8, which at that time was the hottest eastbound manifest and the principal meat-and-perishable hauler on the system. In this instance, it consisted of 87 loads, practically all of them refrigerated, and was powered by EMD units 1771-2420-1773. The thirteen track eastbound receiving yard is no longer used for yarding trains, but instead is used for storage, cleaning, and coopering, and because the latter activity predominates, it is known as the coopering yard (Buffalo elevators demand a large number of high-grade boxcars with grain doors and papered walls). The eastbound hump, which was formerly on the vacant land in the foreground, has been removed, and the class yard was, at the time, the only one in which switching of 'hot' eastbound traffic was performed.
