Train A/BC-3 leaving Seneca Yard
Subject
Diesel Freight Locomotive
Description
The north window of tower Daffords this view of the main tracks, on the far right, and the converging tracks of Seneca yard. Three unit diesel 1786-2438-1787 is doubling the head 41 cars of A/BC-3, a drag which later left with 36 loads and 69 empties. Most of these cars were received here at Seneca from the South Buffalo Railway, a belt line owned by and serving Bethlehem Steel Company. In fact, this yard exists almost entirely to handle interchange with the South Buffalo, although westbound cars received at Buffalo yard and Tifft Street from the DL&W and LV are also handled through here. When the steel works are going full tilt, Seneca's 22 tracks are usually jammed to the fouling points. The outbound freight track, onto which the diesel is moving, is main 3; next comes a middle siding, and then, adjacent to the high iron, is the inbound freight track, main 4. In the distance, about a mile east (railroad-wise; it is actually north by the compass), is Ridge Road overpass.
