Diesel Freight train
Description
The two geeps shown in the previous picture leaving town on SLD-2 are photographed here a couple of hours earlier on the same day as they arrived on DSL-1. Freight service north to Toledo was fully dieselized at the time because of the retirement of steam facilities at Stanley yard. To reduce layover time at Bellefontaine, the diesels off BP-7 and DSL-1 were normally turned back quickly on SLD-2 and CC-2; the schedules were favorable, and as a rule there was no other power available. The few other freight diesels entering Bellefontaine in those days were assigned to fast freights running between St. Louis and Cleveland and points east, and this power was set up to run through. The train above, consisting of 104 cars, is traveling south on the Cincinnati line at Water Street, not far beyond BS tower (the northbound home signals are visible in the background). The tower operator has switched it from the southbound to the northbound main to enhance the move illustrated in the following photograph. Incidentally, the DSL-1 of this date is pictured leaving town six pages back. Detail on the handling of this train at Bellefontaine will be set forth on the next page.
