Description
An account of the resource
Extra 3064 west pulls into Marion with 77 cars, near the west end of the 21-mile stretch of paired track out of Galion (this train is on the Erie; the NYC main is in the foreground. Marion, an industrial city with a population of about 35,000, is well-known for its manufacturing of power shovels and other earth-digging equipment (there are three plants in town which make these products). One of its many other industries is the McMillen Feed Mills, whose establishments rear up in the background below and in the following picture. There is also a large government storage depot a few miles east of town along the Erie-NYC right of way. Business is divided among four railroads - NYC, Erie, C&O, and PRR - but the Big Four's share is nevertheless substantial. It has been handled variously over the years by turnaround locals out of Galion, through locals between Galion and Bellefontaine, and a Marion-assigned yard engine with through freights making the pickups and setouts.

Description
An account of the resource
The Erie operators in AC tower at Marion control, during Lake shipping season, about as heavy an aggregate of rail tonnage as can be found passing one spot anywhere in the United States. At any time of year, business for them is very brisk, involving as it does the crossings of the paralleling C&O and Pennsylvania with the Erie-NYC, the junction of the latter two, and several crossovers and connecting tracks to boot. In this scene, Mohawk 3004 is shown blasting past the depot and express building with 74 decrepit boxcars out of Bellefontaine, bound for either the scrapyard or the heavy repair shop at Ashtabula. The second, third, and fourth cars in the train are over the Pennsylvania diamond; the C&O crossing is just beyond the nearest signal bridge. The tracks diverging in the right foreground are connections between the Erie and the C&O (nearest the mains), and between the Erie and the Pennsylvania.

Description
An account of the resource
As this picture clearly indicates, the yards at Bellefontaine, Ohio, are largely set into a rural landscape of rolling fields and woodlands. The country backdrop, which is unusual in the environs of the principal terminals on the Big Four and for that matter on the rest of the system, imparts an atmosphere of peace and quiet, but this is very misleading at Bellefontaine, as the picture also suggests. The track layout, seen from a second story window of the main yard office, is part of a narrow throat between East yard (in the right background) and BN yard (out of sight on the left). Tracks are, from left to right, the BN switch lead (or "drill track", as local usage has it), the westbound main, the eastbound main, the East yard drill track, and the stock track. The train easing down the westbound main, preparatory to entering BN yard, is the "swipe", a drag run between Galion and Bellefontaine which on this occasion was comprised of L-2 no. 2961 and 64 cars. The eastbound leg of this job, which was a turnaround handled by a Galion crew, was known as the "stock pickup" because of the nature of its duties. The job was taken off when freight dieselization became well advanced. Its main function westbound had been to handle cars accumulated at Galion as through freights reduced tonnage there for the hill out of Ridgeway, a grade which has been "leveled" by the new form of motive power.

Description
An account of the resource
From Sandusky Street bridge, the camera looks down upon one of the busiest spots in the entire terminal at a typically busy moment. In the foreground, L-3a No. 3000 eases off the BN lead onto the westbound main with the 69 cars of manifest DSL-1, out of Detroit for St. Louis. (The unusual manner in which the Detroit-St. Louis trains in each direction are handled at Bellefontaine will be expounded in connection with later photographs.) The steepness of the drop out of the west end of BN yard is noticeable here from the elevation of the train about 25 cars back. In the background: on the right, an H-6 starts up the eastbound main, enroute from the roundhouse to East yard to make a yard changeout. On the westbound main, an L-2 off a drag freight from the west waits for DSL-1 to clear before completing its last lap from East yard to the roundhouse. To the left of DSL-1's train, a pair of GP-7s wait on the roundhouse lead; when DSL-1 clears, they will move to the fueling station at the depot, just west of Sandusky Street (diesels were relatively rare at the time and fuel facilities had not yet been installed at the roundhouse). The operators' shanty at Sandusky Street protrudes above the first car of the train, and the coal dock loons in the background haze.

Description
An account of the resource
This is the scene from the opposite side of Sandusky street bridge. on the eastbound main, CC-2, a fast freight between Cincinnati and Toledo, is whisked through town on its way to East yard by the 3064. The Toledo cars were set off in Gest yard, the north-south yard about a mile south of the location above, and all that remain are 19 cars for points east, including four stock and two perishable on the head end. The Lima-Hamilton switcher on the westbound main is taking on fuel and water (overflow fuel from repeated fueling of diesels on eastbound passenger trains has formed a morass between the two mains). The track on the left, known as the "mill track", is a bypass between Sandusky Street and BS tower, at the crossing of the Cleveland-St. Louis and Toledo-Cincinnati lines. BS, referred to appropriately as the "high tower", is visible in the background below and to the right of the targets on the eastbound signal. Incidentally, a strip of pavement claimed by natives to be the "shortest street in the world" parallels the tracks for one store-front length between Columbus and Garfield Avenues, which cross the tracks within a few feet of each other in the immediate background. This unusual "attraction" is called McKinley Street; it is located to the right of the tracks and just to the left of the column of exhaust from the 3064.
