27 car Greensburg switch run
Steam Freight train
Here is the 1453 leaving town with the 27-car Greensburg switch run. The track in the foreground is the Anderson belt of the Ohio Division, which is used by practically all freights running between Indianapolis and Bellefontaine. On the eastern edge of Anderson, the two main tracks of the Ohio Division part company at Gridley tower and form two separate single-track lines -- one the belt, running via the yard and skirting the town to the south, and the other the passenger main, running via the depot near the middle of town. The two lines converge again at Taft tower, about a mile west of town and five miles west of Gridley. The Michigan District intersects the belt at right angles just east of the yard, connecting with it in two wyes. The 1453 above is starting out on the south wye. The north wye enters the picture at the right, and the Michigan District main track is a short distance behind the camera.

2nd train MC-4, interlocking tower in background
Steam Freight Train
First HC-4, an overnight pickup run from Cincinnati, is wrestled uphill past the high tower and the depot by engine 3026. Part of the train has been set out at Gest yard, and the remaining 48 cars will end their journey in East yard. In this respect, freights from the south come in three varieties: those which have solid East yard consists (LS-6 is generally the only one of this type); those which have solid Gest yard consists (these are infrequent except in summer months when the lake coal business is heavy enough to require solid trains); and combination trains like the one below, which include all of the regular runs except LS-6 on occasion. The crossing gate in the right background protects Chillicothe street where it is intersected by the Toledo Cincinnati line. First MC-4's train on the far side of the tower is on this line; its head end, of course, is on the Cleveland St. Louis line. The mill track, which runs behind the tower, is in the foreground.
